Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is a subset of unclassified information that requires safeguarding and dissemination controls, consistent with applicable law, regulations, and government-wide policies. It includes information that, while unclassified, is sensitive and requires protection, such as personally identifiable information, proprietary business information, and law enforcement sensitive information. The handling and dissemination of CUI are subject to specific controls set out by law, regulation, or government-wide policy. The authorized holder of the information at the time of creation is responsible for applying CUI markings and dissemination instructions. CUI training is mandatory for Department of Defense personnel who handle CUI.
