Corn, also known as maize, is a cereal grain that was first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. It is a tall annual grass with a stout, erect, solid stem, and its large narrow leaves have wavy margins and are spaced alternately. The leafy stalk of the plant gives rise to inflorescences (or "tassels") which produce pollen and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that when fertilized yield kernels or seeds, which are botanical fruits.
Corn is used as livestock feed, as human food, as biofuel, and as raw material in industry. It is a diet staple for many people around the world and is found as a side dish, in soup, in casseroles, and more. When corn kernels are popped, they become a favorite snack while watching a movie.
There is some debate about whether corn is a vegetable, fruit, or grain. According to botanists, corn is actually classified as a fruit, as are tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and other squashes. However, whole corn, like you eat on the cob, is considered a vegetable. The corn kernel itself (where popcorn comes from) is considered a grain, and to be more specific, this form of corn is a “whole” grain.
