A crop is a plant or plant product that can be grown and harvested for profit or subsistence. Crops are typically divided into six categories: food crops, feed crops, fiber crops, oil crops, ornamental crops, and industrial crops.

  • Food crops: These are crops that are harvested for human consumption. Grains, such as corn, wheat, and rice, are the worlds most popular food crops.
  • Feed crops: These are crops that are harvested for livestock consumption.
  • Fiber crops: These are crops that are harvested for cordage and textiles, such as cotton and hemp.
  • Oil crops: These are crops that are harvested for consumption or industrial uses, such as cottonseed and corn.
  • Ornamental crops: These are crops that are grown for landscape gardening, such as dogwood and azalea.
  • Industrial and secondary crops: These are crops that are grown for various personal and industrial uses, such as rubber and tobacco.

Crops may also include macroscopic fungus (e.g. mushrooms) and marine macroalga (e.g. seaweed), some of which are grown in aquaculture. Horticulture crops include plants used for other crops (e.g. fruit trees), while floriculture crops include bedding plants, houseplants, flowering garden and pot plants, cut cultivated greens, and cut flowers.
