According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of goods and services. The CPI reflects spending patterns for each of two population groups: all urban consumers and urban wage earners and clerical workers. The most recent CPI data available is for August 2023, which shows that the CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.6 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, after increasing 0.2 percent in July. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.3 percent in August, following a 0.2-percent increase in July. The CPI-U, US City Average, All Items Less Food and Energy was up 0.2% in August 2023. According to Trading Economics, the Consumer Price Index CPI in the United States is expected to be 305.70 points by the end of September 2023.
