Cyproheptadine is primarily used as a first-generation antihistamine to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes, itching, sneezing, and hives. It is also used for several other purposes including prevention of migraine headaches, appetite stimulation and weight gain in underweight individuals, treatment of cyclical vomiting syndrome in infants, alleviating certain drug-induced side effects like akathisia, treating serotonin syndrome, and for dermatological conditions such as psychogenic itch and hyperhidrosis. Its sedative effects also make it useful for treating insomnia. Additionally, it is sometimes used off-label for conditions like allergic reactions to blood products and some types of allergic skin diseases.
Main Uses of Cyproheptadine:
- Relief of allergy symptoms (hay fever, allergic rhinitis, urticaria)
- Prevention of migraines (especially in some countries)
- Appetite stimulation and weight gain in children and adults who are underweight
- Treatment of cyclical vomiting syndrome in children
- Management of akathisia and tardive dyskinesia induced by antipsychotics
- Treatment of serotonin syndrome (off-label)
- Dermatological uses including psychogenic itch and excessive sweating
- Insomnia treatment due to its sedative properties
This broad spectrum of uses is due to its antihistamine, anticholinergic, and antiserotonergic properties.
