Depersonalization-derealization disorder is a mental disorder characterized by persistent or recurrent feelings of depersonalization and/or derealization. Depersonalization is described as feeling disconnected or detached from ones self, while derealization is the feeling that things around you are not real. People with this disorder may feel like they are living in a dream, and the feelings of depersonalization and derealization can be very disturbing. The disorder is often triggered by severe stress, such as violence, abuse, or other kinds of extreme stress. It is more common in people who experience trauma, such as childhood abuse, and adverse early childhood experiences, specifically emotional abuse and neglect, have been linked to the development of depersonalization symptoms. The disorder occurs equally in men and women, and the mean age at onset is 16 years. The main treatment for depersonalization-derealization disorder is psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, and sometimes medicines are also used.
