Diaphragmatic Breathing
Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing or abdominal breathing, is a technique that focuses on engaging the diaphragm, a muscle in the belly, to take deep breaths and fill the lungs with air more efficiently. This type of breathing allows individuals to use their lungs at 100% capacity, increasing lung efficiency and promoting a feeling of calm or relaxation. It is especially beneficial for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as it can help strengthen the diaphragm and improve breathing efficiency. The basic procedure for diaphragmatic breathing involves lying down or sitting in a comfortable position, relaxing the shoulders, and breathing in through the nose without straining or pushing, while placing a hand on the chest and another on the stomach. Research suggests that diaphragmatic breathing may have various benefits, including lowering heart rate and blood pressure, managing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and improving the bodys ability to tolerate exercise. It is important to consult a healthcare provider before using diaphragmatic breathing, especially if one has COPD, asthma, or another lung condition.
