Digital stimulation is a technique used to empty the reflex bowel after a spinal cord injury. It involves inserting a lubricated, gloved finger or dil stick into the rectum and moving it in a circular motion to stimulate the bowel reflex and open the rectal muscles, allowing stool to leave the body. This procedure is best done on people who do not have painful sensation in the rectal area. The dil should be done at the same time every day or every other day to stay on a schedule and avoid bowel accidents. The time and how often a dil is done depends on the individual. The procedure should be done with slow, gentle movements as the skin around the rectum is delicate. Digital stimulation can be done on a regular toilet or commode, or while lying in bed. The procedure should be performed for at least 20 minutes if no stool is coming out, and for as long as stool is coming out and for five additional minutes afterward if stool is produced.
