DNA spray is a forensic property marking system used as part of crime prevention strategies for businesses and residential properties. It is a synthetic DNA coding combined with microdot technology that can be used to mark items or parts of an item such as a car. The fluid and microdots carry a unique code that the owner has to register in a database to which the police have access. In case of theft and the police recovering the item, it can be traced back to its owner. The DNA spray can be used in instances where the perpetrator cannot be immediately caught or followed, e.g. sprayed by retail staff onto an intruder or sprayed onto a leaving thief from a can located above the shop door. The DNA spray is invisible, odorless, and can be activated by an employee-activated device that sprays a fine, barely visible mist laced with synthetic DNA to cover anyone in its path, including criminals, and simultaneously alerts the police to a crime in progress. The synthetic DNA used is short-chain, making it far more robust than human DNA. The DNA spray is effective in reducing crime and enables police to link criminals to crime scenes and secure convictions.
