A double eyelid, also known as an upper eyelid crease, is a feature where the eyelid has a visible crease, unlike a single or monolid with no crease. It divides the eyelid into two parts, hence the term "double lid". This feature is common among individuals of East Asian descent, and some people opt for cosmetic surgery, known as Asian Double Eyelid surgery or Asian blepharoplasty, to create this crease for aesthetic reasons. The surgery involves creating an eyelid crease resulting in a larger and more symmetric, almond-shaped eye, and it is the most common plastic surgery procedure in East Asia. The procedure may also be performed with an epicanthoplasty, where the inner corner of the eye is extended medially towards the nose to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the eyes. Double eyelid surgery is typically considered for cosmetic purposes, but it can also be performed for medical reasons, such as ptosis, when a droopy eyelid interferes with vision.
