An eSIM (short for embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional SIM card that identifies your device virtually to provide network connection. It is a microchip that is installed on your cell phone and allows you to install several “eSIM profiles”, the equivalent of physical SIM cards, with their respective phone numbers and data plans. The eSIM has the same function as conventional SIM cards: it contains personal information such as the telephone number and the configuration that connects the device to the mobile network. The main difference between the eSIM and the physical SIM card is that the eSIM is completely virtual, so to use it, you don’t need a physical chip like the traditional SIM card, but you need a compatible cellphone. eSIMs are programmable remotely via software and are built into newer smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, drones, and even cars. They are space-saving game-changers for connectivity. With an eSIM-compatible device, you can easily install an eSIM profile provided by operators/carriers to be able to buy an e-SIM data plan when you need it, on the go.
