Eco Mark is a certification mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to products that conform to a set of standards aimed at the least impact on the ecosystem. The marking scheme was started in 1991 and is a voluntary mark labeling consumer products as environment-friendly based on specific quality and environmental parameters. The Eco Mark Scheme falls under the ambit of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The mark is issued to various product categories, and the development of standards for more products is in progress. The Eco Mark signifies that a product is the right environmental choice product, and it helps in identifying eco-friendly products in the market. The Eco Mark is awarded to products with relatively less environmental impact compared to similar products, during their entire life cycle, from extracting and collecting the product materials to the manufacturing, distribution, use and consumption, disposal, and recycling. The Eco Mark program is intended as a means of offering a choice of products with a lower environmental impact.
