Eduroam (education roaming) is an international Wi-Fi internet access roaming service for users in research, higher education, and further education. It allows students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop. Some key features of eduroam include:
-
Secure and privacy-preserving: Eduroam is based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards, providing a higher level of security than typical commercial hotspots.
-
No additional accounts or IDs: With eduroam installed on a device, there is no need to request special accounts or borrow other peoples IDs. Users can simply activate their device and they should be online.
-
Global coverage: More than 10,000 eduroam hotspots are available at universities, research centers, academies, schools, and other research and education institutions in over 100 territories worldwide. As eduroam grows, more hotspots are appearing in additional places such as libraries, museums, railway stations, and coffee shops.
-
Free for users: Users do not have to pay to use eduroam. The service is provided at the local level by the participating institutions.
-
Federated authentication: Eduroam is a federated authentication service that allows participating institutions to provide access to their wireless networks to users from other eduroam participating institutions. Users can use their home institution credentials to access the network.
-
Availability in non-participating locations: In some countries, Internet access via eduroam is also available at locations other than the participating institutions, such as libraries, public buildings, railway stations, city centers, and airports.
