Expository preaching is a form of preaching that involves the comprehensive explanation of a biblical text, presenting the meaning and intent of the passage. The preacher starts with a passage of Scripture and studies the grammar, context, and historical setting of that passage to understand the authors intent. Once the preacher understands the meaning of the passage, they craft a sermon to explain and apply it. Expository preaching differs from topical preaching in that the former concentrates on a specific text and discusses topics covered therein, whereas the latter concentrates on a specific topic and references texts covering the topic. The advantages of expository preaching include presenting the entire content of a Bible passage, infusing the pulpit with power, and conveying a divine message through the inspired Word. Expository preaching is favored among those who believe that the Bible is the very word of God and thus worthy of being presented in its purest essence, rather than modifying the message to match the characteristics of the audience.
