Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid drug that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as an analgesic (pain relief) and anesthetic. Fentanyl is available in prescription form, but it is also made and used illegally. It is a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the U.S. . Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Just 2 milligrams of fentanyl, equal to 10 to 15 grains of table salt, can be lethal. Fentanyl can be tested using a fentanyl test strip by placing a small amount of the drug supply in a container, adding about 1/4 inch of water to the container, inserting the fentanyl test strip in the water for 15 seconds, taking the fentanyl test strip out of the water and laying it flat for two minutes, and then reading the fentanyl test strip.
