Fertilization in plants is the process of sexual reproduction that occurs after pollination and germination. It is the fusion of the male gametes (pollen) with the female gametes (ovum) to form a diploid zygote, which later develops into a seed. Fertilization occurs in the zygote and is a physicochemical process that takes place in the ovule. The process of fertilization in plants can be grouped into three types: porogamy, chalazogamy, and mesogamy. Porogamy is the most common type of fertilization carried out in all angiosperms or flowering plants. The complete series of this process takes place in the zygote to develop into a fruit.
