Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is the fluid portion of whole blood that has been separated and frozen within a specific time frame, typically within 8 hours of collection. It contains essential proteins, including all coagulation factors except platelets, fibrinogen, albumin, and other plasma proteins. FFP is used medically to treat patients with deficiencies or defects in clotting proteins, especially when they are bleeding or at risk of bleeding and when specific factor concentrates are unavailable. It helps restore blood clotting ability and provides volume resuscitation. FFP is also used in conditions like major hemorrhage, liver disease, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) by supplying necessary coagulation factors to promote effective hemostasis.
