Fibroglandular density refers to the amount of fibrous connective tissue and glandular tissue in the breast compared to fatty tissue. It is a measure of breast density and is important because dense breast tissue can make it harder for a radiologist to detect cancer on a mammogram. A breast that has scattered fibroglandular tissue has slightly more fatty tissue than dense tissue. Having dense breast tissue is common, and it is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Women with dense breasts may need additional screening tests to detect breast cancer.
