Fionna and Cake is a spin-off of the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time, which is an American animated streaming television series. The characters Fionna and Cake are gender-swapped versions of Adventure Times main heroes, Finn and Jake, respectively. The idea for Fionna and Cake evolved from drawings that Adventure Time character designer and storyboard revisionist Natasha Allegri had posted online during the show's earliest seasons. They debuted in season three's "Fionna and Cake" episode, which was both "a jab [and] a huge celebration of, [sic] the feeling of being a fan" and "allowing something completely ridiculous to make your heart tighten". Fionna and Cake are an imagination created by Ice King, but similarly sustained by the perception and consensus of the beings within that universe. Fionna and Cake, with the help of the former Ice King, embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery.
