Follow-on milk, also known as stage two milk or 2nd age milk, is a type of infant formula designed for babies aged six months and older. It is made from animal milk, such as cows or goat's milk, in accordance with European regulations, and fortified with various nutrients, including iron, calcium, and vitamins. The main purpose of follow-on milk is to provide a source of iron and vitamin C during the weaning period, helping to ensure that babies receive a balanced diet that meets their nutritional and developmental needs.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that follow-on milks are unnecessary for infants aged 6-24 months. Research also shows that switching to follow-on formula at 6 months has no benefits for babies, and they can continue to have first infant formula as their main drink until they are 1 year old. Breast milk and infant formula are the recommended main drinks for babies, with follow-on milk being an optional supplement for those who have started a mixed diet.
