Four-ball is a format in the game of golf where two players form a team and each golfer plays their own ball throughout the round. The teams score on each hole is the lower of the two players scores, and only one of a pair is required to complete each hole. Four-ball can be played in either stroke play or match play format, depending on the rules of the tournament or competition. In match play, a four-ball consists of two teams of two players competing directly against each other, and each hole is won by the team whose member has the lowest score. This form of golf is commonly played in team golf competitions such as the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, and Presidents Cup. In stroke play, the team with the lowest aggregate score over a set number of holes wins. Four-ball is also known as better ball or best ball, and it is sometimes abbreviated as 4BBB.
