Four-ball in golf is a pairs playing format where two golfers form a team and each play their own ball throughout the round. The teams score on each hole is the lower of the two players' scores, and only one of the pair is required to complete each hole. The format can be used in both stroke play and match play competitions. In stroke play, competitors are paired and play as a team, and the winners are the team with the lowest aggregate score over a set number of holes. In match play, two teams of two players compete directly against each other, and each hole is won by the team whose member has the lowest score. Four-ball is also known as best ball or better ball. The term "four-ball" is sometimes abbreviated as 4BBB.
