Fulvic acid is a chemical compound that is formed when microorganisms in soil break down plant material over long periods of time. It is a type of humic substance, which is a naturally occurring compound found in soils, compost, marine sediments, and sewage. Fulvic acid is constructed from similar aromatic, polyaromatic, aliphatic, and carbohydrate units as humic acid and humin, and contains the same functional groups, mainly carboxylic, phenolic, and ester, albeit in varying proportions. Fulvic acid is a unique colloid that diffuses easily through membranes, whereas all other colloids do not. It is also a natural, powerful antioxidant and helps to carry vitamins and nutrients to the right place in our bodies.

Fulvic acid is found in the humus (organic matter) part of soil and peat, and is also present in clay, sand, mountain rocks, and mud. Fulvic acid from different sources can have different properties. People use fulvic acid for various conditions such as allergies, eczema, Alzheimers disease, and cancer, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. However, past research, including animal studies, suggests that fulvic acid could help with ulcers, allergies, eczema, anxiety and memory recall, gastrointestinal function, and immune system. Fulvic acid is POSSIBLY SAFE when used for up to 4 weeks when applied to the skin. There are promising signs that fulvic acid could be beneficial for people who have diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and inflammatory issues, but there isn’t enough research yet to conclusively say it’s safe or truly beneficial.
