Gog and Magog are a pair of names that appear in the Bible and the Quran, variously ascribed to individuals, tribes, or lands. In the Bible, Magog is described as a son of Japheth, grandson of Noah, and is often associated with apocalyptic traditions, mainly in connection with Ezekiel 38 and 39 which mentions "Gog of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal"). On the basis of this mention, "Gog and Magog" over time became associated with each other as a pair. In the New Testament, this pairing is found in the Book of Revelation 20:8, in which instance they may merely be metaphors for archetypal enemies of God). In Ezekiel’s prophecy, Gog will be the leader of a great army that attacks the land of Israel, which is “peaceful and unsuspecting” at the time. The biblical passages concerning Gog and Magog became the focus of later exegetes, who made repeated attempts to associate them with specific individuals and places. However, it is important to note that God has not chosen to give us all of the details regarding the end times, and understanding the biblical material is quite difficult.
