GP Rating Course is a six-month pre-sea training program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The course is designed to train candidates in both Deck and Engine Room tasks, and GP Rating candidates are those who have been trained in both departments. They perform tasks related to Seamanship, Cargo Handling, Maintenance work on deck, Operation and Maintenance of Machinery. The course syllabus includes the combined study of Deck and Engineering subjects, and it covers all aspects of the seafaring profession. The eligibility criteria for the course include passing 10th standard with science and mathematics as subjects, securing a minimum of 40% marks in English in 10th standard exams, or passing a 2-year I.T.I course from a government-approved institute with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the final year. After completing the course, candidates will be eligible to join Indian/Foreign Shipping companies as a Deck/Engine crew, and with further sea service, they would be promoted to officer level with certain sea service and qualification requirements on passing the examinations conducted by DGS.
