A growth mindset is a way of viewing challenges and setbacks where individuals believe that their abilities can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others. People with a growth mindset believe that even if they struggle with certain skills, their abilities aren’t set in stone and can improve over time with effort. This is in contrast to a fixed mindset, where individuals believe that their skills are innate gifts and wont improve no matter how hard they try.
The concept of a growth mindset was first introduced by Carol Dweck of Stanford University nearly 30 years ago. Her research showed that individuals who believe their talents can be developed tend to achieve more than those with a fixed mindset. When entire companies embrace a growth mindset, their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed, and they also receive greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation.
Developing a growth mindset involves reflecting on the positives, shifting the focus from "whats going wrong" to "whats going well," and reframing ones approach to challenges to stay motivated to work towards improvement.
