Appendicitis is a condition where the appendix, a small, finger-shaped pouch located in the right lower part of the abdomen, becomes inflamed. Acute appendicitis is the most common form of the condition and is characterized by pain in the lower right part of the abdomen, loss of appetite, and low-grade fever. However, a small number of people may experience chronic (long-term) appendicitis, sometimes called a "grumbling appendix" or "rumbling appendix". Chronic appendicitis is a condition where the appendix is inflamed or obstructed, causing appendix-related pain that can last for years.
The symptoms of chronic appendicitis are not always clear-cut and can be similar to other medical problems. Some of the symptoms include recurrent episodes of pain in the right iliac fossa accompanied by vomiting and anorexia, and tenderness in the right lower abdomen. Imaging studies of people with abdominal pain may show a normal appendix, as chronic appendicitis is rare.
