Gulika Kalam is a period or muhurtham ruled by Shani, who is the son of Saturn. It is a time that is believed to be inauspicious for doing any good work according to Hindu astrology. Gulika Kalam is different from Rahu and Yamaganda Kala because it raises twice a day, once during the day and again at night, and it repeats itself twice a day. The popular belief is that whatever happens at Gulika Kala will repeat itself. Ancient seers also supported this belief by saying one should not perform any inauspicious work during the Gulika Kala. The sign in which Gulika Kaal or Mandi rises is considered inauspicious for most of the important events. Auspicious ceremonies like marriage or funerals are avoided during Gulika Kaalam. If any activity is commenced during Yamagandam or Gulika Kalam, it may meet with destruction, and it is logical to avoid inauspicious activities during Gulika Kalam or Gulikai.
