In Microsoft Word, a gutter margin is an extra space added to the side margin, top margin, or inside margins of a document that you plan to bind. It helps ensure that text isnt obscured by the binding and provides extra space for binding documents such as physical books, manuals, or similar printed materials. The gutter margin feature is available in the Word desktop application on Windows and Mac, and you can set the gutter margin by following these steps:
- Click on the Layout tab in the ribbon.
- Select Margins in the Page Setup group.
- Click on Custom Margins from the drop-down menu.
- In the Gutter box, enter a width for the gutter margin.
- In the Gutter position box, click Left or Top.
Note that the Gutter position box is not available and determined automatically when you use the Mirror margins, 2 pages per sheet, or Book fold option. The gutter margin is typically the area where you might three-hole punch your paper in single-sheet layouts.
