HALT is an acronym that stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, and Tired. It is a tool used to remind people of four of the most common stressors in recovery. Practicing HALT works as an effective warning system, reminding you to pause and identify common triggers before picking up a drink or a drug. HALT can also serve as a reminder to all of us that we need to take care of our basic needs every day. When these basic needs are unmet, we are susceptible to self-destructive behaviors, including relapse. Taking a minute to HALT allows you to think before you act and evaluate what you are feeling that could be a trigger for addiction. HALT can also be used to avoid common stressors and improve self-awareness. In addition, "halt" is a verb that means to stop or bring to a stop.
