The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a long-standing issue that has its roots in competing claims to the Holy Land, and includes disputes over borders, Jerusalem, security, and Palestinian refugees. The conflict began in the mid-20th century when Israel was created, sparking the first Arab-Israeli War. The war ended in 1949 with Israels victory, but 750,000 Palestinians were displaced, and the territory was divided into three parts: the State of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Since then, there have been several waves of violence between Israelis and Palestinians, including a military confrontation between the Israeli military and Hamas in 2014, which ended with a cease-fire deal brokered by Egypt. In 2018, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip conducted weekly demonstrations at the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel, which ended with the seventieth anniversary of the Nakba, the Palestinian exodus that accompanied Israeli independence. In 2022, Israeli forces launched a three-day offensive on the occupied Gaza Strip, during which they committed apparent war crimes. The conflict has escalated in recent days, with Palestinian militants in Gaza firing a barrage of rockets towards Israel, prompting sirens as far north as the Tel Aviv area, east to Beer Sheva, and many other locations in between. The situation is ongoing and remains tense.
