Currently in Nepal, there have been large-scale protests throughout September 2025, predominantly led by Generation Z youth. These protests initially started in response to a government ban on multiple social media platforms but quickly expanded to address widespread corruption, political mismanagement, and demands for transparency and accountability. The demonstrations became violent, involving clashes with security forces, vandalism, and fires set to government buildings, including the parliament and Supreme Court. Following the unrest, which resulted in at least 72 deaths and hundreds of injuries, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned. Sushila Karki, a former Supreme Court chief justice and the country's first female prime minister, was appointed as the interim leader. The government dissolved parliament and scheduled new elections for March 5, 2026. A curfew imposed during the peak of unrest was lifted in Kathmandu and surrounding areas as calm gradually returned. The interim government is focused on restoring stability and addressing the protesters' demands while preparing for the elections.
