HER2-Positive Breast Cancer
HER2-positive breast cancer is a type of breast cancer that tests positive for a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). This protein promotes the growth of cancer cells and is found in about 15-20% of breast cancers. HER2-positive breast cancers tend to be more aggressive than other types of breast cancer, but they are also more likely to respond to treatment with drugs that target the HER2 protein. Patients with HER2-positive breast cancer may experience the same symptoms as other types of breast cancer, such as finding a lump or having it detected through a routine mammogram. It is recommended that every invasive breast cancer be tested for the presence of HER2 because the results significantly impact treatment recommendations and decisions. If diagnosed before it spreads, HER2-positive breast cancer can be successfully cured. The exact cause of HER2-positive breast cancer is still being studied, and researchers cannot yet say what might prevent it.
