HIV-1, or human immunodeficiency virus type 1, is a virus that attacks the body's immune system by destroying CD4 cells, making the person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. If left untreated, HIV-1 can lead to the development of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). It is primarily spread through contact with certain bodily fluids, most commonly during unprotected sex or through sharing injection drug equipment. HIV-1 is the most common type of HIV and is responsible for the majority of HIV cases worldwide. While there is currently no effective cure for HIV-1, it can be controlled with proper medical care, including antiretroviral therapy (ART)
