HMS is an abbreviation for "His Majestys Ship" or "Her Majestys Ship" and is used as a ship prefix for ships of the navy in some monarchies, including the British Royal Navy. The first recorded use of the abbreviated form HMS was in 1789, in respect of HMS Phoenix. Submarines in His Majestys service also use the prefix HMS, standing for His Majestys Submarine, though this is sometimes rendered HMS/m. However, HMS can also stand for other things, such as the Health Management System, which is a system used by the Florida Department of Health to supply electronic health information.
