She was a pioneer in the field of computer science and one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer. Hopper invented the first compiler for a computer programming language, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She also helped create the first compiler for computer languages. Hopper was a gifted teacher and communicator, and she played a significant role in persuading business clients of the value of adopting new technologies. She was awarded the National Medal of Technology in 1991, becoming the first female individual to receive this honor.
