Form I-9, officially known as the Employment Eligibility Verification, is a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services form mandated by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. It is used to verify the identity and legal authorization to work of individuals hired for employment in the United States. All U.S. employers must properly complete Form I-9 for every individual they hire for employment in the United States, including citizens and noncitizens. The form consists of two sections and two supplements: Section One, completed by employees, and Section Two, completed by employers or authorized representatives. Employers must retain and store Forms I-9 for three years after the date of hire, or for one year after employment is terminated, whichever is later. The form is used to establish that an employee is eligible to work in the U.S. and to verify an individuals identity by requiring the individual to provide acceptable documentation as evidence of identity and employment authorization.
