The Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) is an extremely conservative Christian organization founded by Bill Gothard. The organization describes itself as a "Christian-centered discipleship for individuals and families through events, programs, and teaching resources". However, some former members have described it as a cult-like organization that advocates for radical patriarchy and stringent fundamentalist views. The Duggar family, who are Independent Fundamentalist Baptists, are members of the IBLP. However, not all of the Duggars follow IBLP. The IBLP has been alleged by some to be a cult. Children are expected to be homeschooled, to always obey their fathers, and adhere strictly to IBLPs interpretations of biblical Scripture. Women are raised to learn how to become good wives and mothers, and to birth and raise children for the IBLP men chosen by the women’s fathers to be their husbands. The Duggars' popularity heightened awareness of IBLP and its teachings.
