In psychology, the id is one of the three components of personality, along with the ego and the superego. According to Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytic theory, the id is the primitive and instinctual part of the mind that contains sexual and aggressive drives and hidden memories. It is the impulsive and unconscious part of our psyche that responds directly and immediately to basic urges, needs, and desires. The id is present at birth and is the source of bodily needs and wants, emotional impulses and desires, especially aggression and the sexual drive. It operates within the unconscious part of the mind and is not affected by reality, logic, or the everyday world. The id acts according to the pleasure principle, which is the psychic force oriented to immediate gratification of impulse and desire.
