Ileus is a temporary condition where the intestine is unable to push food and waste out of the body. It is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal bloating and pain, nausea, vomiting, severe constipation, loss of appetite, and dehydration. The most common cause of ileus is abdominal surgery, particularly when the intestines have been manipulated. Other causes include medications, infections inside the abdomen, and certain medical conditions. Ileus is not caused by a physical blockage and rarely leads to gangrene. Treatment involves temporary restriction of food and fluids by mouth, fluids given by vein, and suction via nasogastric tube. Ileus usually resolves on its own after 1 to 3 days with restriction of food and fluids by mouth. If an ileus does occur, it’s important to get treatment as quickly as possible.
