IMAX with Laser is a next-generation laser projection and 12-channel sound system designed exclusively for IMAX screens. It delivers stunning images and heart-pounding audio on the biggest screens for the world’s most immersive cinematic experience yet. The experience is set apart by its next-generation 4K laser projection system which features a new optical engine and a suite of proprietary IMAX technologies that deliver increased resolution, sharper and brighter images, deeper contrast as well as the most distinct, exotic colors ever available on-screen. The new experience also features IMAXs 12-channel sound technology with new side and overhead channels that deliver greater dynamic range.
A laser light source provides substantially more brightness than a xenon bulb and allows IMAX to power its largest screens with even sharper and more lifelike images. IMAX with Laser has a better resolution (more pixels) and dynamic range (the ratio between the brightest and darkest parts of an image) than traditional IMAX projectors.
IMAX with Laser is a radically different approach than other laser and xenon projectors in the industry. It completely redesigned the optics to maximize thermal stability and ANSI contrast by removing the prism, a component that has been common to every laser and xenon projector ever built, and replaced it with a patented IMAX free space light engine incorporating an invar frame, one of the most thermally stable materials.
IMAX with Laser was first introduced in December 2014, with the first installation occurring at the Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto.
