IMO stands for International Maritime Organization. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for regulating shipping and improving the safety, security, and environmental practices of international shipping. The IMO was established in 1948 following an agreement at a UN conference held in Geneva, and it came into existence ten years later, meeting for the first time in 1958. The organization is headquartered in London, United Kingdom, and currently has 175 Member States and three Associate Members.
It is important to note that IMO can also stand for "in my opinion" in informal contexts such as text messaging and social media.
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is another organization that uses the acronym IMO. It is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country.
