An Implanon, also known as Nexplanon, is a contraceptive implant that is a small, flexible plastic rod about the size of a matchstick. It is inserted under the skin of the upper arm and releases a low, steady dose of the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. The implant works by preventing ovulation, thickening the mucus of the cervix, and thinning the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg and for a fertilized egg to implant. It is a long-term birth control method, effective for up to three years, and is reversible, allowing for removal at any time if the individual decides to discontinue its use or wants to get pregnant. Implanon is considered a highly effective form of birth control and is often referred to as long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) .
