An information system is a combination of software, hardware, and telecommunication networks that collect useful data, especially in an organization. Information systems are used to collect, store, process, and transmit data and digital information. They are used by businesses and other organizations to carry out and manage their operations, interact with their customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace. The main components of information systems are computer hardware and software, telecommunications, databases, and data warehouses, and human resources. Information systems can also include specialized systems such as industrial/process controls systems, telephone switching and private branch exchange (PBX) systems, and environmental control systems. Information systems are not the same as computer systems, although computer systems are part of an information system. The field of information systems involves the effective design, delivery, and use of information and communications technologies to solve problems for companies, governments, and society.
