Injury
Injury is defined as physical damage to the body resulting from acute exposure to thermal, mechanical, electrical, or chemical energy, or from the absence of such essentials such as heat or oxygen. It is a general term that refers to harm caused by accidents, falls, hits, weapons, and more. Injuries can range from minor to life-threatening and can happen at work or play, indoors or outdoors, while driving a car, or walking across the street. Wounds are a specific type of injury that break the skin or other body tissues, including cuts, scrapes, scratches, and punctured skin. Other common types of injuries include animal bites, bruises, burns, dislocations, electrical injuries, fractures, and sprains and strains. Injuries can be caused in many ways, such as mechanically with penetration by objects or substances producing injury. Injury in humans has been extensively studied for its importance in medicine, and much of medical practice, including emergency medicine and pain management, is dedicated to the treatment of injuries.
