IRF stands for Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility. It is a type of healthcare facility that offers rehabilitative and therapeutic care to patients who are recovering from a surgical procedure, illness, or injury. Patients who stay in an IRF can rebuild their strength and mobility and recover from various illnesses or injuries, including joint replacements, brain injuries, strokes, cardiac events, and neurological disorders. IRFs are free-standing rehabilitation hospitals and rehabilitation units in acute care hospitals. They provide an intensive rehabilitation program, and patients who are admitted must be able to tolerate three hours of intense rehabilitation services per day. The IRF QRP (Quality Reporting Program) creates IRF quality reporting requirements, as mandated by Section 3004(b) of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010.
