The special forces of Israel are called "Sayeret" (Hebrew: סיירת, pl.: sayarot), which translates to "reconnaissance units" in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) nomenclature. These units specialize in intelligence gathering, surveillance, commando operations, and other special forces roles, in addition to reconnaissance. One of the most well-known and secretive special forces units is "Sayeret Matkal," which is a field intelligence-gathering unit conducting deep reconnaissance behind enemy lines to obtain strategic intelligence and is also tasked with counter-terrorism and hostage rescue missions
