Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a condition where a baby in the womb doesnt grow at the expected rate during pregnancy. It occurs when the fetal weight is estimated to be below the 10th percentile for its gestational age. There are two types of IUGR: symmetrical IUGR, where all parts of the babys body are similarly small in size, and asymmetrical IUGR, where the babys head and brain are the expected size, but the rest of the babys body is small. IUGR can be caused by various factors, including problems with the placenta, chronic diseases or infections in the mother, high blood pressure, genetic disorders, and smoking or alcohol abuse. Doctors can diagnose IUGR by measuring the mothers belly, performing ultrasounds, and monitoring the babys growth, movements, blood flow, and fluid around the baby.
