Java chip is a term used to describe tiny, semi-sweet chocolate-covered cookie crumbs that are specifically designed to break down quickly when blended, and can easily pass through a straw for drinking. Java chips are not legally chocolate, and their composition gives them a lower melting point than chocolate chips. Java chips are commonly used as an ingredient in blended coffee drinks, such as the Java Chip Frappuccino® Blended Beverage from Starbucks and the Java Chip Frappe from MOCAFE USA. Java chips can also be used as a substitute for chocolate chips in baked goods such as cookies, brownies, or cakes. Java chips are made with Ghirardelli® dark chocolate. While java chips cannot be easily purchased for personal consumption, they can be bought from specialty coffee stores.
