Chemotherapy, or "chemo" for short, is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy works by targeting cells that grow and divide quickly, such as cancer cells. The drugs used in chemotherapy can be given in different ways, including orally, through an injection, or through a device surgically implanted into a large vein, usually in the chest. Chemotherapy can be used to slow the progression of cancer, relieve symptoms, and partially shrink tumors, even when the cancer is not curable. In such cases, chemotherapy can extend survival, relieve cancer-related symptoms, and improve quality of life. Chemotherapy used for these purposes is sometimes called "palliative chemotherapy".
